1902 Resort and Retreats - Glamping and More!
This weekend, I had the opportunity to host a milestone event (my wife's 40th birthday) at the 1902 Resort and Retreats in Wolverine. It was a location that captured the "Up North" spirit while feeling like a high-end, grown-up version of an adult slumber party.
The Experience
Communication with the host was top-tier. Kelly was incredibly responsive to emails and checked in with us before we even arrived to ensure everything was ready. It was clear they were invested in making sure our stay went smoothly, which took a lot of the stress out of planning a party for 20ish people (which the location could have held more for the dinner).
The facility itself was beautiful and had a layout that felt perfect for our group. We had about 20 guests join us for drinks and dinner, and then a core group of 10 stayed overnight. The atmosphere really lent itself to what I can only describe as an "adult slumber party". Or a better way to explain it, it felt like being teenagers throwing a house party, but in a refined, comfortable setting.
The Accommodations
The standout feature was the queen-sized bunk beds. They were solid, provided plenty of room, and each bed had its own power outlets for charging phones or devices. This even helped with doing things like having a small fan while sleeping, or a sound machine at each bunk. The mattresses were memory foam; while I personally found them a bit firm for my liking, the rest of our group absolutely loved them.
The bathrooms were equally impressive, especially the women’s facility. It was stocked with thoughtful extras that people often forget: feminine hygiene products, lint rollers, and deodorant. It was those small details that made the place feel complete. Both the mens and the womans bathrooms included showers if needed, and separate stalls for the toilets.
Logistics & Planning
For those planning an event here, there were a few "honest" things we noted:
The Kitchen: There was no stove. We brought a charcuterie spread with cakes and drinks, which worked perfectly. The kitchen had a microwave, hot plate, full fridge/freezer, and a great "pass-through" area to the dining room, but I’d recommend sticking to pre-cooked or simple foods. Having no stove did not affect our party at all, but it's something to keep in mind. The facility very clearly tried to accommodate everything they could, and were very communicative about anything we needed. We didn't need anything, but they had glasses, plates, silverware, and anything else for basic serving. Also, I felt very comfortable with the owners' communication that they would either work with us on anything missing, or take in account anything we wanted, to try and provide it in the future!
The Temperature: The building used a boiler system that kept the facility very warm. We had the thermostats at 68, but it still felt quite toasty while sleeping. There was a large box fan available, but if you’re a "cold sleeper," you might want to bring a personal fan along or plan to sleep on a bed near a window. This wasn't a bad thing, as we were there during a winter storm, but it showed how solid the building was, and how warm it was while we slept.
The Vibe: The dining area was large with well-arranged tables and a nice sitting area with couches and a TV. It was simple, but it had everything we needed to keep our group entertained. As with everything else, Kelly stayed in touch checking in frequently to make sure we had anything we needed.
Overall 1902 Resort and Retreats was a unique addition to the Wolverine area. It offered plenty of room, a fun location, and a beautiful layout that encouraged people to actually spend time together. It was more than enough room for everyone and provided exactly the kind of "togetherness" we were looking for.
As a local to the area, I was very excited to find this venue. They were perfect and from start to finish, they met every expectation. I even told the owners after that I almost waited for the "gotch ya" but only found the place to meet every expectation, and make my wife's party as perfect as we could have imagined.
I recommend Resort 1902 to anyone out there looking for a simple, yet elegant and amazing evening, overnight, or weekend. The time and effort was put in to have the simple elegant location of a historical location in Northern Michigan, but also provide a comfortable and modern location for events small and large.
