Petoskey State Park

TL;DR
This has always been our go-to local beach. The dunes quiet the outside world until it’s only waves and wind. There is a small shop on the beach with snacks and drinks, but for a larger selection Toski Sands is right outside the entrance, and with Petoskey and Harbor Springs are just down the road for any other needs.

I highly recommend this beach for anyone in town for a day or longer. The views are breathtaking, being able to see both Harbor Springs and Petoskey. Little Traverse Bay provides fresh clean water and clean sandy beaches. The water gradually get’s deeper, with a sandy clean bottom until it’s well over my head.

Whether just taking 10 minutes to relax and watch the water, or taking the day to enjoy the water and beach, I can’t recommend the Petoskey State Park enough. Even as a hot tourist spot, it’s a local’s favorite.

My 2019 Shadow Phantom is waiting to watch the sun dip down to the water.

Why it’s worth a stop

  • Beach: Wide, sandy shoreline on Little Traverse Bay; classic golden-hour sunsets.

  • Camp: Two modern loops—Tannery Creek & Dunes—with electric, modern restrooms/showers, and a dump station.

  • Stones: Petoskey-stone hunting is popular; Michigan allows up to 25 lb total per person per year from state lands.

Good to know

  • Pets: Welcome in most park areas on a 6-ft leash, but not along the lakeshore/swim beach.

  • Entry: Recreation Passport required for vehicle entry; reserve camping via the DNR system. DNR Reservations

  • Vibe: Busy on hot weekends; calmer mornings and shoulder season.

Pros

  • Big, clean beach with room to spread out

  • Modern campground amenities close to town

  • Sunset views for days

Cons

  • No dog beach access

  • Can feel crowded on peak summer afternoons

  • Wind off the bay can kick up quickly—bring layers

North Coast Ride Notes

  • Easy add-on to a Tunnel of Trees (M-119) cruise; groceries, coffee, and dinner are minutes away in Petoskey/Harbor Springs.

  • During peak times, they will turn away cars and bikes if the parking lot is full. I recommend gettign there earlier in the day, or after everyone starts leaving for dinner.

  • Best spot to watch a breathtaking Northern Michigan Sunset on Lake Michigan in the Petoskey area.
